“What Is This Transaction?” — Ask Your Client to Explain a Transaction
“What Is This Transaction?” — Ask Your Client to Explain a Transaction
Overview
Bank descriptions are often cryptic — "POS 4417 SQ *JT" tells you nothing. Previously the only option was calling or emailing the client and hoping they remembered. The "What Is This?" feature sends the client an automated SMS or email asking them to explain the transaction, and captures their answer directly back into LedgerSync.
How It Works
Find the unclear transaction (on the Transactions page or in the Rules Engine)
Click the "What Is This?" action on the transaction
LedgerSync sends the client an SMS or email showing the transaction details (date, amount, description) and asking what it was for
The client replies in plain language — no login required
The client’s answer is captured back into LedgerSync and attached to the transaction
Spotting Client-Answered Transactions
Transactions that have been updated by a client’s response are flagged so you can spot them at a glance:
They are visually highlighted in the transaction list
You can filter the list to show only client-answered transactions, so processing responses becomes a quick batch task instead of hunting row by row
Typical Workflow
During categorization, send "What Is This?" on every transaction you can’t identify — don’t wait
Continue working; answers arrive asynchronously over the next hours/days
Filter to client-answered transactions, read each explanation, and categorize (or create a rule) accordingly
The client must have a mobile number (for SMS) or email address on file in LedgerSync. The reply is stored with the transaction, creating a permanent record of the client’s explanation — useful for audit support and future reference.
